What is the Armour of God? Part 1

THE ARMOUR OF GOD Part 1

(Continuing on our series of Spiritual Warfare)

Each piece of the armour relates to an attribute of God, so in effect, when we put on the armour we are putting on God’s qualities: truth, righteousness, peace faith and salvation. This draws us closer to God, and when we are closer to God we are able to resist the enemy. 1 Peter 8 says, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” This scripture tells us what is happening in the spiritual realm and our answer lies in Ephesians 6 10-11 “Finally be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the Armour of God so you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Don’t let yourself be caught without your armour. How do we put on spiritual armour? There are two essential ways, and we must do both; one is to live it, and the other is to pray it on daily.

The Belt of Truth is the first of six pieces of armour in Ephesians 6. God wants us to love the truth. Being honest with ourselves and others takes daily examination, asking God to reveal our weakness in this area and to give us the opportunity to change.

To put on the Breastplate of Righteousness means to live in righteousness. It is righteous living that enables us to resist the enemy, while disobedience invites the devil into your life. To live righteously we need to understand temptation and how to resist it. Society tells us to experience everything life has to offer but self-control is a fruit of the spirit we need to cultivate. So what goes through your mind when you are tempted? How do you respond? We cannot control what happens to us but we can control our attitudes and behaviours.

Putting on the Shoes of Peace is not always easy. Trials can reveal the depth of our character by stripping the emotional layers, revealing our hidden fears. It can expose the worst part of us. Restraint is the opposite of panic and you can’t resist the devil if you can’t restrain yourself. Lay your worries on God’s shoulders they are big enough to handle it.

In our next blog I will continue with The Shield of Faith, Helmut of Salvation and Sword of the Spirit and how to activate the Armour to your advantage. So don’t miss the next blog.
