Part 2 Spirituality In Culture
SPIRITUALITY IN CULTURE Part 2
(This blog will conclude our series on Spiritual Warfare)
So what spiritual beliefs does the Bible teach? There are nine Spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit referred to in 1 Corinthians 12. Wisdom, Knowledge, Discernment of Spirits, Faith, Working of Miracles and Healings, Tongues, Prophecy and Interpretation of Tongues. The Holy Spirit gives the gifts as they are needed. A Word of Knowledge is when The Lord tells you about a specific situation, so that you can help the person. In 2 Samuel 11, 12 God sends Nathan the prophet to David to confront him about David’s sin with Bathsheba. Likewise a Word of Wisdom can be encouraging, correcting and bring Biblical truth to a person. 1 Kings 3:16-28 shows Solomon’s wisdom with the two mothers.
Praying in the Spirit (Tongues) is your spirit communicating directly with God. It is primarily used for intercession (praying for others) praise and worship. When we don’t know how to pray praying in Tongues is a perfect prayer. Sometimes when we pray with our own understanding, our thoughts and desires can influence us, muddling our prayer. In the interpretation of tongues, it is up to God what he wants translated. A few times I have been given the Interpretation of Tongues. One day while I was praying in Tongues, I could clearly hear English words. The sentences of praise and worship were so incredible I couldn’t believe my ears. I knew it was the interpretation because I could never think up sentences that were so beautifully articulated. I believe God was showing me how amazing our Spirit language is and to never take it for granted.
Prophecy today has taken on a different role from that of the Old Testament. Thank goodness for that! A Pre-Jesus prophet only had bad news to proclaim to a stubborn rebellious people. With Jesus living inside every believer and communication via the Holy Spirit prophecy has changed. It has become personal, relating to churches and individuals. In 1997 a prophet came to our church and prophesied over me. He said God would deliver me from fear. At that time I was going out with a wonderful man but we were both unable to take our relationship further because of fear. Within a month God had taken our fear away and we were ready to commit our lives together in marriage. Ephesians 4:29 gives us a good starting point for what prophecy should be. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building other up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Prophecy is neither judgmental nor condemning but in keeping with the God of love who loves us with a passion that is beyond our comprehension.
God is so much bigger than what we think. He can do so much more than we imagine, because we are limited to an earthly realm. God is spirit, he is omnipresent. God is always the same yet totally unpredictable so put on your spiritual glasses and let God surprise you today.
